RacerX Gullwing's Giant Snail Racing

Giant Snail Racing is a weekly racing event inside the virtual worlds of Second Life. This event was first created after Thanksgiving of 2004 by RacerX Gullwing and is part of a series of live machinima's created for Treet.tv (previously SLCN). Racers dawn giant snail avatars and run across a track full of obstacles in an attempt to come in first place and win.

The race is steamed live every Saturday at 11am PDT. During the event the audio is streamed inside Second Life for the spectators and racers to listen to while they watch. The hosts include the creator RacerX Gullwing, owner of Treet.tv Wiz Nordberg, Salem Sella, Kiwi Alfa and sometimes a guest such as the escargoligst DrFran Babcock. Camera work is handled by RacerX Gullwing and Texas Timtam.

Each race can take up to an hour and is followed by a replay even the event inside "Club Snailo", located below the spectator area.

The Track

Wide view of the racing track.

The current track is circular and is hosted in the simulator called "Hawthorne". It can be found at this SLurl:

As of 1/1/2011... The Following is out Dated and needs updating but the latest track is similar.

After leaving the Start checkpoint the racer will then cross a pool covered in break away blocks, navigate a changing maze, run up a ramp while being bombarded by cows, lava balls and other physical object, enter a village full of crazy mushrooms which will send them flying up into the air and then finally to catapults which will hurl them to the end of the maze. This track changes seasonally and changes from times to time.

The New Track

RacerX is currently building a new race track on the simulator border of "The End" and "The Future". The estimated completion date for this track is sometime in November 2009. 2010 January We then took it to Hawthorne and we are finally back on the Ground again.

We used to have a race in Hawthorne back in 2004 / 2005 on Tuesday Nights back when it was Chases Manhattan was a wonderful Aimee Weber Build complete with Empire state building. When we moved in in 2010 it was a vacant lot and had nearly empty for most of a year.

Racers

Racers lined up ready to race.

Just who can be a Giant Snail Racer? Short answer is anyone with a Second Life account. Giant Snail Racers come from all walks of life and with different backgrounds. The majority of the racers are English or Spanish speaking and are driven to race for the money, to brag to their friends saying "I'm a giant snail racer!" or, like most, just for the fun of it. Becoming a Giant Snail Racer is fun and easy. Simply contact waeyla Tenk inside Second Life or read further into this article. Also check the External Links section at the bottom to see archives and find YouTube videos.

Racers must compete in the following line up:

  • Race 1: Amateurs
  • Race 2: Regulars
  • Race 3: Regulars
  • Final Race: 8 racers taken from the top of the first three races.

Top winners from races 1, 2 and 3 go on to to the final race.

Spectators

Spectator benches.

The following is the way it was before we moved to Hawthorne. We no longer use the floating benches and instead use a camera system that makes everyone see the same thing. I miss the floating benches.

If you wish to observe the races yourself, and even cheer the racers on, you can do so via the spectator benches. These special floating benches are color coded to match the color of each racer currently racing. These benches will follow your snail around allowing you to view them without effort. The white bench does not move and allows you to observe as you wish. In addition to watching it yourself you can also watch a stream of the event via Treet.tv.

All spectators will need to remain in the simulator "The Eternal" in the designated area.

Joining

As said earlier in the article, you can contact waelya Tenk to find out more information, or you can go to the following SLurl to see things for yourself:

Giant Snail Race SLurl for Second Life

Once there you will need to click on the green arrow with the snail attached to it. This will take you up into the sky where the spectator and track areas are. If you look around the initial area you teleport to in the sky you will see a series of items for sale, one of which will say "Race Snail 7.0". Touch this item and you will receive the free giant snail racing avatar.
